Review of the Movie "D"
« on: December 12, 2017, 05:42:44 am »
D - The Prequel of Company - ranDeep hooDa !

Director: Vishram Sawant
Cast: Randeep Hooda, Chunkey Pandey, Ishaa Koppikar, Rukhsaar
But who else is here (as Producer) : Its Ram Gopal Varma

In Ramuji's Trilogy of films "Company , D & Sarkar", D may looks slightly blur to someone, but I gotta tell u two things are for sure :

(1) Randeep Hooda as Deshu is probably the discovery of the year.
(2) The whole film has a new kind of raw, chilling and overdramatic presence in the whole story.

May be it's a remix of work - from Satya & Company, Yet, the understated intensity of Randeep Hooda and some fabulously written scenes elevate this film notches above the ordinary.

There is one more thing fabulous about D : Its , as far as I can remember is the first ever Movie Prequel made in India ! I like the idea of not using the same people who was in company , giving this movie a unknown brand from the start. Good start Ramuji in this world of prequel.

In Company, Mallik (Ajay Devgan) was an underworld supremo. D focuses on the events that led him there. The protagonist is Deshu (Randeep), a car mechanic in Dubai.

His mother’s death brings him to Mumbai, where he gets the first whiff of street violence and police brutality. After that, Deshu decides to join the underworld. Soon, he becomes the gang’s master strategist. The head of the gang (Goga Kapoor), trusts him immensely and soon Deshu becomes popular within and outside the gang, much to the dislike of head's two sons (played by Yashpal Sharma and Sushant Singh). Inter-gang rivalry begins and the rest of the story highlights Deshu’s rise to the most feared man in the underworld - he becomes D from "Deshu".

First-time director Vishram Sawant borrows a lot from Satya and Company. Like Manoj Bajpai in Satya, in Deshu’s story too there is a loyal friend-cum-accomplice in Raghav (Chunky Pandey). Deshu’s character is like Mallik’s in Company — silent and brooding. Like Satya, D also begins and ends with a narrative.

The look of the film is very realistic: scenes like Deshu’s lone confrontation with another gangster, the chase after his first killing and the bloodbath he causes to avenge Raghav’s death are too dramatised.

Comparisons are inevitable with Ajay Devgan and Manoj Bajpai, but Randeep doesn’t emulate anybody — his style is entirely his own. The main thing that spelbound me & all the other fans of this new Hero, is the expressionless, indifferent face of Hooda in the movie - like he is some kind of Cyborg or something , which he is not, obviously. Yet , this face bugs me in the first place . And still this indifferent face of him make me his fan. The whole film is about him, without him , nobody else is going to get anything. A special scene where he wears the sunglass made him jump like i'm seeing Enrique Iglesias !

And I like the concept of don't killing your most hated enemy at all ! The Police Officer who beated him in the start of the movie, or the old gangster - Hooda hates them most, so he is not going to kill them ! He rather wants to see their fear when he is around & this is his secret entertainment, as he told his girlfriend. Boy , I hope Susmita Sen still wants him!  Shocked

D does not believe in luck , when asked about his good luck (Kismat) that he was able to kill his first assigment & still be alive, his cold voice murmured that he does not believe in luck. At that time , it seems a tall talk , but as the movie progresses , it is becoming more obvious. Hats off to this new Hero. The young actor literally carries the film through and through.

With all respect to ramgopal Varma , there are some hiccups in the script. Deshu is supposed to be the gang’s policy-maker but none of his strategies are clearly defined. Also, Deshu is a policeman’s son so him getting third degree seems unbelievable. And , again , please , stop using a whole bunch of songs in a movie like this - it kills the brand image of the movie. Only one song , that may be considered as slightly appropiate is the song with Chunky Pandey, Isha Koppikar & their friends , although it may also be skipped. And the other one - OH MY GOD !!! I think RGB heard me screaming before making Sarkar, but after D !

Vishram, however, displays his finesse in the crucial scenes. Raghav’s love story with a bargirl (Isha Koppikar) has poignant moments. Their death sequence is one of the film’s highlights. Chunky Pandey is surprisingly likable and he deserves accolades for his portrayal in his last scene.

Isha Koppikar scores again after Kya Kool Hain Hum and Rukhsaar strikes a chord in her comeback film. Some other compelling performances come from Sushant Singh, Yashpal Sharma and Ishrat Ali (as the local politician). Although I have to say , Sushant Singh is too good to be played a role like this , he should have been in a better role.

D whips up a new genre of masala gangster flicks — a smooth, swirly shake of realism and drama. It is enjoyable , its chilling , its raw, its slightly disconnected in some places but still Susmita Sen has a lot of reasons to smile at the end
