Diego Lopez took little solace from his exceptional performance during their 3-2 defeat at Atletico Madrid.

Lopez, the former Real Madrid goalkeeper, was the stand-out player on his return to the capital but despite making a string of brilliant saves - including a second-minute penalty stop from Diego Forlan - he was unable to prevent Villarreal from surrendering a 2-0 lead to leave the Vicente Calderon empty-handed.

"That I had such a leading role in the game is very bad news," said Lopez.

"I`ve never had to stop so much in a game, and I don`t remember there being so many clear chances in a game in which I was playing.

"It was one of my best games personally. All their chances were very dangerous and difficult to stop.

"(But) it`s not worth much if you end up losing, especially as it was a very important game because we`ve lost a good opportunity to put some distance between them and us."

Fourth-placed Villarreal could have moved eight points clear of Atletico in the race for the final Champions League spot, but that is down to just two now following last night`s thrilling match.

Manuel Pellegrini`s side looked to have completed the perfect smash-and-grab victory when goals from Mati Fernandez and Cani saw them leading 2-0 at the start of the second half.

However, it all went downhill after that, with Sergio Aguero pulling a goal back for Atletico a minute after Cani netted, before the visitors lost Javi Venta to a 65th-minute red card and then conceded two goals in the last nine minutes to Forlan and Antonio Lopez.

Lopez added: "I think that perhaps we deserved to lose, but I`m going away a little bitter because they turned the game around at the end.

"Now we must only think about Saturday`s game (against Athletic Bilbao) and not slip up. We must pick up points at home, as they are going to be key."
